The Blanket
The second major symbol we have chosen for this educational exhibit is the blanket. Whilst a yoga mat may sit neatly along a sign like this, the blanket has a number of advantages as a symbol of Yoga.
In traditional Yoga a blanket is used instead of a mat. A blanket can be folded up to support dodgy knees and hips and make certain postures more accessible. A blanket is also used during Yoga Nidra, a guided relaxation technique offered by Satayananda Yoga Instructors.
In india blankets are given out in their hudreds of thousands each winter by yoga ashrams supporting those in need and for warmth and comfort.
This generocity of spirit has inspired the blanket featuring alongside a chair as a symbol of authentic Yoga.
